Family & Classification
The Humphead parrot fish (Bolbometopon muricatum) comes from the Scaridae family which means parrot fish. Parrot fish have to be one of the simplest fish to link to its family. Parrot fish are easily linked to the family (Scaridae) because they have to have a beak to be classified under that family name. Humphead parrot fish stand out so easily in its family because of its size, the lump on its forehead and most notably the beak which helps conect it to its family.
Behaviour
They form very large schools that can be found moving about in the water. The smaller fish are on the inside of the school with the larger ones around the parameter of it. The males are dominant and they will have the females fighting over being around them in the school at various times. The males often challenge each other for overall dominance of the schools. The most fascinating thing recently discovered about the Humphead parrot fish is that they bump heads together violently, it is thought to be a sign of dominance between the two males and hence fourth the side name bump head parrot fish.
